X-COM:
TERROR FROM THE DEEP
The sequel to the awesome original X-com, this game fell short of its
predecessor. The basic premise and workings of the game are the same as
the first X-COM (see the review on this), with the following changes:
1.) The
aliens come from under the oceans instead of outer space.
2.) There
are battles on land, as well as under water. Some weapons in the game will
not function on land, although the game will allow you to take them with
you on missions.
3.) There
can be multi-part missions now... finish one part, then go on to a larger
scenario.
I feel that the addition of the weapons which work only under water is
an excellent idea. The story line is well thought out. The underwater graphics
and bubble effects are great. The improvements stop there.
The aliens still control a soldier's mind too easily. The missions are
now WAY too long. Before, there was a nice balance between combat missions
and admin time spent doing research and other things. My first alien base
mission took me five hours, because the last alien hid in a corner while
I searched the 3 levels of the base over and over. I stood right next to
him several times, but until I actually turned and faced him, I couldn't
see him. This was an extreme case, but all the base missions are just too
lengthy.
On a scale of 1-5, I give this one 4.5 hockey sticks.
